Home Remedies for Healthy Hair

Natural Treatments that Imitate Salon Products

There are many products that may be right in your refrigerator or pantry that can have healthy effects on your hair.
Olive Oil, Mayonnaise, and Vinegar for Moisturised, Shiny Hair
Olive oil moisturizes the scalp and hair and is rumoured to make hair grow thick and curly. It is best massaged into the scalp and shouldn't be applied to hair that is naturally oily.
Mayonnaise is said to moisturize, add shine to, and strengthen hair. Mayonnaise is comprised of oil and eggs, and both ingredients have beneficial effects on hair. The protein found in eggs will strengthen weak, dry, and damaged hair, and the oils will add shine. Mayonnaise treatments should only be used every 2 - 4 weeks, since they may make the hair appear greasy.

Vinegar can also be used to make hair shiny. The acetic acid seals the hair's cuticle, acting as a detangler and providing sheen. Try using carbonated water as a rinse. The carbonic and phosphoric acids will have the same effect as vinegar, but without the smell.

Baking Soda and Beer to Remove Build-up on Hair
A home product used in many salons is baking soda. Mix baking soda with shampoo in equal parts, and use the mixture to remove build-up from the hair caused by styling products. The abrasiveness of the baking soda also removes dead skin cells from the scalp. Use this mixture once a week.

An old German beauty secret is to wash the hair with beer. Some haircare manufacturers have capitalized on this idea by making beer-based shampoos and conditioners. If using a can of beer, boil it first to remove the alcohol, which can dry the hair.

Lemon Juice, Tea, Yogurt, and Ketchup to Change Hair Tone
Lemon juice has been used for decades to lighten hair, but only works on hair that has never been colored or chemically treated. A mixture of lemon juice, chamomile tea, and yogurt may lighten hair as well, but the effects will be subtle.

The red color of ketchup can be used to neutralize unwanted green tones caused by chlorine on blonde or bleached hair. Tomato soup can also be substituted.
