Could Acupuncture Reduce Your Hot Flashes?

If you’re leery of needles, you may want to consider getting over your fear: Acupuncture could help reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes in postmenopausal women, according to research being presented this week at the Acupuncture Research Symposium in London.

According to the study, women who used acupuncture for 12 weeks reported that they had almost six fewer hot flashes during a 24-hour period and were able to sleep better at night.

“After menopause, 10 to 20 percent of all women have nearly intolerable hot flushes,” said Tejre Alarek, a senior researcher at the University of Tromso in Norway. “The promising results of the study suggest that acupuncture may be able to provide an alternative to long-term use of hormone replacement therapy.” Female First
